Somebody Bought the Pubic Hair Piece?
Saturday, July 4

Last night was the opening of the one month exhibition "tattoed artists" at LPM gallery. Going into the exhibition I had mixed feelings about what I was showing. I have been trying to develop a new medium, one that encorporates photography, light and resin.

The piece I submitted for the exhibition was one of my first attempts and well, what it was doing conceptualy it wasn't doing visually so after some discussion with Guy and the currator Guen we decided to use an earlier version that bypassed the light and resin.

I felt as though I was exhibiting a work in progress.

So when someone bought it I was floored, and flattered. The fact that someone else understood what I was doing with this bizzare subject matter (thats right I am that eccentric person that uses their body hair in their art, my mother must be so proud) gave me a huge boost of confidence.

So here is the digital image, which does not fully represent what the final piece will look like. I will continue to play until I find a construction that works.

Here is the artists statement that explains this image:

Back in February my partner Angus moved away. I elected to deny my over active libido until we could be together again. Knowing my body would go untouched and unseen for months on end I let my hair grow long, all of it. These patches of hair, previously well manicured, grew wild. It became a measure of my loneliness. When it came time to reawaken my sexuality for a brief visit I shaved it off. The hair became the center piece of the reliquary this photo is based on. It is a memento to what has been put on hold and the part of me that will come alive again.

Michelle, In buying your piece I was initially intrigued by the image itself; curious about the use of the reliquary and captivated by a contemporary icon. Reading the artist statement cemented the desire I had to purchase it into a plan to do so. Your exploration of the sacred, your reference to classical iconography, and creating a talisman to your self and your love was truly inspirational.

I've just repainted my place and part of the excitement is going to be finding the right place for this piece. Much as the religious pause before traditional icons for a moments reflection, seeing this image each day is a heart warming reminder of the power and endurance of committed love and a cause to pause for just that moment of appreciation.

I look forward to seeing where you take this image as you develop it further.

Bill
